Acne — Ayurvedic Treatment

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. It causes whiteheads, blackheads or pimples and is most common among teenagers, though it affects people of all ages.

Signs & Symptoms of Acne

Acne signs vary depending on the severity of your condition. Immediately contact your doctor if you notice any of the following:

  • Whiteheads (closed plugged pores)
  • Blackheads (open plugged pores)
  • Small red, tender bumps (papules)
  • Pimples (pustules) — papules with pus at their tips
  • Large, solid, painful lumps under the skin (nodules)
  • Painful, pus-filled lumps under the skin (cystic lesions)

Causes of Acne

Four main factors cause acne:

  • Excess oil (sebum) production
  • Hair follicles clogged by oil and dead skin cells
  • Bacteria proliferating in the pores
  • Inflammation

Hormonal imbalance and chronic stress are also known triggers that increase risk.

Diagnosis of Acne

To diagnose acne, your doctor will review your personal and family medical history and perform a thorough physical evaluation of the affected skin areas to assess type and severity.

Complications of Acne

  • Permanent scarring and pitting of the skin
  • Dark spots (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation)
  • Psychological effects — reduced self-esteem and anxiety

Prevention of Acne

Preventing the risk factors of acne is the best way to curb complications. Adopting consistent lifestyle habits, avoiding oily cosmetics, maintaining a low-glycaemic diet, and managing stress are essential. A well-planned diet is a key component of Acne treatment in Ayurveda.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Acne

Ayurveda targets the root cause of acne through blood purification, Pitta-balancing herbs such as Neem, Manjishtha and Giloy, and customised herbal formulations. Unlike topical chemical treatments, Ayurvedic care clears acne from the inside out with no harmful side effects.
