What is Migraine?
Migraine is a headache that can cause severe throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation, usually on one side of the head. Attacks can last hours to days and may interfere with daily activities.
Signs & Symptoms of Migraine
- Visual phenomena — seeing shapes, bright spots, or flashes of light
- Vision loss
- Pins and needles sensations in an arm or leg
- Weakness or numbness in the face or one side of the body
- Difficulty speaking
- Throbbing or pulsing pain, usually on one side
- Nausea and vomiting
- Extreme sensitivity to light and sound
Causes of Migraine
- Hormonal changes in women (estrogen fluctuations)
- Alcohol and excess caffeine
- Stress at work or home
- Bright or flashing lights and loud sounds
- Imbalances in brain chemicals
Diagnosis
- MRI: Produces detailed images of the brain and blood vessels.
- CT scan: Creates cross-sectional images to detect tumors, infections, or brain damage.
Complications
Left untreated, migraine may lead to serious medication-overuse headaches.
