What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become weak and brittle. It occurs when the creation of new bone doesn't keep up with the loss of old bone.
Signs & Symptoms of Osteoporosis
- Back pain, caused by a fractured or collapsed vertebra
- Loss of height over time
- A stooped posture
- A bone that breaks much more easily than expected
Causes of Osteoporosis
Bone mass peaks around age 30. As people age, bone loss accelerates. Peak bone mass is partly inherited and varies by ethnic group. Diabetes and heart disease may increase risk.
Diagnosis
- Bone density scan using low levels of X-rays to measure mineral proportion in bones (usually hip and spine).
Complications
Untreated osteoporosis can cause limited mobility and chronic pain from fractures.
