What is Peptic Ulcers?
Peptic ulcers are open sores that develop on the inside lining of your stomach and the upper portion of your small intestine. The most common symptom of a peptic ulcer is stomach pain.
Signs & Symptoms of Peptic Ulcers
- Heartburn (acid indigestion) — a burning chest pain starting behind the breastbone
- Gnawing or burning ache in the upper abdomen that may worsen or improve with eating
- Intolerance to fatty foods
- Feeling faint
- Vomiting or vomiting blood — which may appear red or black
- Disrupted sleep
- Nausea — stomach discomfort and the sensation of wanting to vomit
Causes of Peptic Ulcers
Peptic ulcers occur when acid in the digestive tract eats away at the inner surface of the stomach or small intestine. Helicobacter pylori bacteria commonly live in the mucous layer that protects the stomach lining, and can cause inflammation and ulcers.
Diagnosis
- Upper endoscopy: A tiny camera is inserted to examine the stomach lining for inflammation.
- Blood tests: To check red blood cell count and screen for H. pylori infection.
- Fecal occult blood test: Checks for blood in stool as a possible sign of ulcers.
Complications
Left untreated, peptic ulcers may lead to internal bleeding that can cause anemia or require hospitalisation. Severe blood loss may cause black or bloody vomit or stools.
